Assateague Island National Seashore includes
thirty-seven miles of the wildest and most beautiful beaches on the east coast for you to
explore and enjoy.
During the summer, lifeguards oversee a section of the beach near the bathhouse and visitor center. Changing stalls, toilet facilities, rinse-off showers, and drinking water are available at the bathhouse.
Outside the lifeguard protected area, you can enjoy surf fishing and even surfing (boards of all sizes are available for rent on Chincoteague). Or just fly a kite.
And any time of year, there is nothing like a relaxing walk or a jog along the beach.
Please note that the National Seashore has the
only public swimming area
that is lifeguard protected on Chincoteague & southern Assateague Islands.
The entrance free for Assateague Island (for both the National Seashore and the Refuge) is $5.00 per day per vehicle. A seven-day car pass is also available at the entrance gate for $15.00, and a one-year pass or duck stamp is available for $30.00. There is no charge for bikers and hikers. Parking lots are available next to the beach and near most of the trails on the Refuge. Pets are not allowed on Assateague - not even in cars.
