Between 7:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. (the time can not be predicted exactly -
dependent on tide, currents, and readiness of ponies) ponies swim Assateague Channel at
Chincoteague Memorial Park - east side of island. No charge by Fire Co. for parking (at
High School - click here) or seeing ponies swim. After a brief rest, ponies are herded to
Carnival Grounds.
11:00 a.m. - Dinner served in the dining room on Carnival Grounds by the Ladies Auxiliary
of Fire Co. Viewing of ponies in corral and carnival attractions. The first colt to come
ashore in the pony swim (King or Queen Neptune) will be given away at the carnival
grounds. Time to be announced. You must have a ticket. You must be present to win.
6:30 p.m. - Entertainment on stage.
7:00 p.m. - Carnival attractions.
11:00 p.m. - Entertainment on stage or free cash drawing at the closing of carnival. You
must be present to win.

8:00 a.m. to 12 noon - Auction of Ponies (yearlings or younger). The ponies, owned by the Chincoteague
Volunteer Fire Co., will be sold only on this day. Carnival attractions after
the auction.
11:00 a.m. - Dinner served by the Ladies Auxiliary in the dining room on Carnival Grounds.

7:00 p.m. - Carnival attractions.
11:00 p.m. - Entertainment on stage or free cash drawing at the closing of carnival. You
must be present to win.
Extend your trip to Friday. Ponies swim back to Assateague. Time to be
announced.

- Separate tickets required for each drawing. You do not have
to be present to win.

The following information is for
those who plan to bid for a pony during the auction. The auction begins at 8 am
on Thursday, July 26th.
1. Be there early if you wish to bid on a pony. The crowds are huge and you
will want a space as close to the front as possible.
2. Wear a sun hat and sunscreen. Bring plenty to drink. A pencil and paper are
always useful. A camera is nice. A folding chair is a good idea since the bleachers fill up quickly.
3. You do not have to register for the auction. If you raise your hand during the
auctioneer's chant, you ARE MAKING A BID.
4. The average price in 1999 was $1,620.00. 86 ponies were sold. The lowest price was
$800.00, and the highest price was $4,200.00. The average price for the ponies
in 2000 was $2,060.00. The highest priced foal went for $7,500.00, and the lowest successful bid was $1300.00. Total sale was $173,085.00, for 84 foals sold.
5.Your transportation home for your new foal must be approved by the pony committee. (A horse trailer)
6. The only acceptable forms of payment are Visa, Mastercard, and CASH. The Fire Department will not accept checks!
7. Registration of ponies purchased
at auction - from the Chincoteague Pony
Association.
