May 9, 2009 15th Annual International Migratory Bird Celebration Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge on Assateague Island 9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. Attention is focused on bird migration during the spring and fall, when migrants may be seen throughout most of North America. Thousands of shorebirds, numbering over 20 different species, use Chincoteague National Wildlife refuge and Fisherman Island to feed and rest during the spring and fall migration before moving on to their final destination. During the celebration, there will be workshops, lectures, bird walks with birding experts, activities for children, films, guided tours of Assateague Lighthouse, and much more. Call (757)-336-6122. May 24, 2009 The Blessing Of The Fleet Held at the Robert Reed Waterfront Park, 4:30 p.m. Local ministers give blessings to protect the watermen from harm and ensure a good fishing season.
