Was stationed at the air base back in 57-58. Flew many hours in the back of a JD towing targets for the fleet to shoot at. Have fond memories of Chinco, and the surrounding area. Held a VU-4 reunion a few years ago. Not many showed up, but we were able to get on base, thanks to one of the former members of our old squadron. Proved one thing, guess you can never go back and expect to find things the way that they were. Memories will alway be with me, no one can take them away. Any of you OLD members of VU-4 can contact me at: jerbuscher@sbcglobal.net

My husband and I went to Chincoteague last year. While there, we went to the Seafood Festival. We had a wonderful time. The food was great. We stayed with friends. It was the most relaxing vacation we've ever had. I lived there as a child and still have relatives there. Needless to say, the island has changed tremendously. We moved a couple of months after the Ash Wednsday Storm.

At 42 years of age, it has been my lifelong dream to visit Chincoteague and watch Pony Penning Days. When I was seven, I became a lifetime pen pal of Marguerite Henry the minute I received her magical reply letter in the mail! What a sweet, kind, generous woman...I miss her! SO... I won 4 tix anywhere Southwest Airlines flies and now I'm excitedly researching places to stay in Chincoteague! Any suggestions anyone?? I can't wait to fly (tho, I'd rather drive cross country)out in July :-) Love the Chamber site, it's helpful! Sincerely, Rebecca

My wife and I were both born and raised in Baltimore, MD. Before marriage, while living in nearby Pocomoke, MD where I had taken a job, I had visited the island several times. Then, when my soon-to-be wife visited me in Pocomoke, I took her to Chincoteague. We both fell in love with it, and, in fact, it turned out to be our first home together. To this day, over a dozen years later, it is still one of our fondest memories. This year, I'm beginning to feel like it's about time for a

Debbie Shusterman, North Kingstown, Ri
Dear Chincoteague Chamber of Commerce, Before leaving RI for a vacation to Williams burg, VA, one of the things I did was spend time at a local bookstore doing research about other attractions in VA. I don't need theme parks to have fun even though my husband & I did the historic tri-angle of Jamsetown, Williamsburg and Yorktown, were were great and not your average theme park. What I found, too, were the wild ponies of Chincoteague and Assateague but did not know which to choose. I ended up calling theinformation phone number of the Chincoteague ponies and was given excellent advice on the who, what, where's and why's of your beautiful ponies. My husband and I were so fortunate to see these beatiful ponies and actually got to see a young foal that looked to be no more than a week or two. Thank you for the highlight of our vacation and the wonderful job you do taking care of the ponies! Sincerely, Debbie and Ron Shusterman North Kingstown, RI

We come every year for a week around Oyster Festival, and love the island, its natural beauty and very friendly people. We were blown away this year by the herculean effort that put on a fabulous Oyster Festival, despite the nor'easter and its dampening effects. Thanks everyone!

My family just returned from our Pony Swim/Auction holiday on the islands. Yours is a beautiful island town! We especially loved swimming in the Ocean and the activities surrounding the Pony Penning week. What really made it special for me are the friendly people who live and work there. Michael from the Purple Pony, Irena from Ledo's Pizza, the head Librarian at the library (I don't remember her name), to name just a few, went above and beyond their normal duties to make us feel welcome. Thank you Chincoteague, we will return soon! (and perhaps even buy one of the Pony's then!).

My husband and I have been coming to Chincoteague almost every year for the past 12 or 13 years, and it is our home away from home. We love the ocean, and the pristine beach on Assateague is a joy. We are avid cyclists, although I do not like climbing hill, so these two beautiful islands are perfect for me. We ride the trails of Assateague every day when we visit, and also take many side trips along the roads of Chincoteague. We delight in seeing new small businesses open and are sad to see others that have clsed over the years, but we look forward to the constant presence of the water, breezes, wildlife and beautiful sunsets of our second home. We will be bringing our 9 year old grandsons this year, and can't wait to share this all with them. We consider the DelMarVa Peninsula a wonderland, and Chincoteague its crown jewel!

Abraham and myself visited your island for the first time 2 years ago and loved it so much we recently came back again. We noticed the revitalization that's been taking place for the past 2 years. It's lovely, but please strive to maintain the quaint charm that makes your island unique. We'll be back again and again!

I have been coming to Chincoteague Isl. to visit my dear friend for years now, and it is the most beautiful place on earth. The untamed ocean is breath-taking. The history of the pony swim is awesome. The wildlife is soothing...the people are so kind. I will return again this year! I can't wait for the Fireman's Carnival! I am taking my grandchildren to the Pony Centre (what fun that will be) and we are going on Capt. Barry's cruise. Perfect.

My father, Harvey Richard Reynolds, was born on Chincoteague Island along with his 8 brothers and sisters. His parents were Risdon J. Reynolds and Abigail Estelle Jester Reynolds. I have some distant cousins who still reside on the Island but haven't visited the Eastern Shore in a long time. My Dad and Mom met and married in Oyster VA (near Cape Charles VA)- Mom was originally from Willis Wharf and Hog Island. Her name was Helen Doughty Reynolds Osborn. Both my folks are deceased but a lot of family still lives in/around the Cape Charles and Exmore areas. I have great memories of growing up there. Oddly enough I now live in the Mojave Desert about halfway between Los Angeles CA and Las Vegas, NV.

I grew up on Chincoteague Island, it will always be my home. I'm 29 years old now and the last time I seen the island I was 10. I plan to visit in the near future, but this time with my daughter, who is looking forward to seeing the beautiful island through her own eyes and not my memory. I can't wait to enjoy all of the wonderful things about the island that I've missed so dearly, and to see the islander's smiling faces once more.

Our trip to the island was enjoyable. We stayed at the Refuge and enjoyed their great hospitality and friendliness. Great food at the restuarants and the ice cream parlor had so many wonderful choices. We were hoping to get a little closer glimpse of the ponies but still enjoyed them from a distance. We hope the city fathers keep the quaint atmosphere of this great beach town!!

Recently we had the opportunity to stay at the Spinnaker and were extremely pleased with everything; the rental, the flowers, the cake, Kelly, our contact person, cut firewood, and I could go on and on. Everyone we met in Chincoteague and Assateague was friendly and helpful. Even the weather contributed to our visit.

You have a very informative website here; one that has obviousely taken alot of time and effort to put together. Although we've driven through the Eastern Shore going from Norfolk to Salisbury, MD; we've always wanted but never had the time to stop. This year though, we'll definitely be seeing you! Thanks for having such a great site.

My wife and I have been visiting Chincoteague for the last 11 years. Last December was the first time we were there for the Christmas parade. This December was our second time, and I thinl it will be an annual evant from now on. As enjoyable as Chincoteague is during the summer, winter offers unique opportunities as well. Quiet walks on the beach and nature trails, driving the loop just before dusk are just two of the pleasures. Seeing all the migrating Snow Geese and Great Blue Herons was indescribable. It looks like my wife and I will be enjoying Chincoteague in the Spring, Summer, Fall and Winter.

My first visit to the island was with the GirlScouts when i was 14....Boy that was long ago! There is no other place i would rather be than Chincoteague! I think i might have missed 2 years to the island out of 31. We have alot of friends there. My youngest son wants to move to Chincoteague because he misses all his friends and the Skatepark not to mention LFSC. We always have a wonderful time and it's because of the friends we have on the island! I'm not called a Tourist by Tyler Howard anymore(I love that kid) We'll be back again in July and i can't wait to get there! We have been staying in places that are managed by a wonderful woman named Shelia for as long as i can remember. We saw alot of changes over the years! I like to look at all the pictures i took 20+ years ago of all the big fishing boats lined up by the bridge....but that is a thing of the past now! You can change the Island but you will never change the People who live there!!

We have visted Chincoteague Island several times over the past five years or so, both over the summer months and again in the fall. I don't know which time of year is more beautiful! Assateague Island, with its' pristine beach is beautiful; the ponies are a delight to observe; your town is quaint right down to the 'old time' theater. We never miss the chance to stop and say 'hi' to Capt. Bob and purchase some of his treasures. What a delightful person who has some great stories to share! Also, can't forget the best meals in town served at the Island Family restaurant. Stopped by for dinner one night after noticing all the cars with VA plates; figured if the 'locals' eat there that's good advertising! Sorry to see the Landmark Plaza sold out and Chincoteague Inn followed suit. Don't let commercialization take over your lovely Island - it will lose its' charm!! There are enough condos out there. Our only regret--we didn't visit your beautiful island many years earlier!

| Although my stay was only 3 days, I totally enjoyed the Island. We explored many things and had wild adorable Bambi like deer on or near where we stayed at Spinnaker. We had a wonderful time at the Chili Festival and enjoyed extremely wonderful seafood. I will visit again. Thank you for your wonderful peaceful Island and thanks to all who helped us along the way. | I attended a wedding near by and stayed at The Holiday Cottages in Chincoteaque. I can't say enough about what a lovely place it is. The unique shops and restaurants are absolutely marvelous, the lack of fast food places is a bonus to the island, please do all you can to keep it that way. The only clue that we were not in paradise was The Hampton Inn, I was very sorry to see it there, and I hope it's not a sign of the future. This was the most enjoyable time I can remember. We are planning to come back again next year Thank You for you hospitality. Nancy & Krissie |

i took my family back to the island at the end of august. My horse crazy daughter had a great time. we took a boat ride to look for ponies, and we also saw them on the marsh on the drive to the beach. we had some great crabcakes at CaptainsZacks, and Eta's channel side restaurant. my daughter took a riding lesson at the chincoteague pony center, and stayed for their pony show. we also check on the ponies that were still at the fair grounds...great suprize to see my "favorite" palimino-pinto mom and son still together... we also enjoyed our visit to the "DECOY DECOY DECOY" shop on main street, what wonderful works of art on display. on our drive home we also visited the northern part of asseteague island on the Maryland side. As we entered the island state park, we were greeted by a small herd of wild ponies, right at the car window.. my daughter thought she died ans went to pony heaven! next time we'll spend more time on both, the maryland end to camp and the cincoteague va end to relax...

| MY GRANDFATHER WAS RALPH JESTER ON NORTH MAIN ST. WITH ALL THE HURRICANE PROBLEMS IN NEW ORLEANS, IT WAS VERY INTERESTING TO READ ABOUT THE ASH WED HURRICANE DONNA. MY FATHER, NORMAN JESTER(TICK TO HIS FAMILY AND FRIENDS) DROVE ALL THE WAY FROM MICHIGAN WITH MY MOTHER(BARBARA) TO HELP MY GRANDFATHER CLEAN-UP THE MESS. IT WAS TRULY A TESTIMONY TO THE HARDINESS OF THE MEN AND WOMEN OF CHINCOTEAGUE HOW THEY CAME BACK FROM THE STORM. THANKS FOR THIS SITE. | WOW what and event. we had a wonderful time, and we saw the ponies, trecked thru the swamp, and got into the mud. Thanks to Mr. Daisy at his decoy shop on ridge road, for all the great tips on how to and where to see the swim. it was a thrill of a life time for my daughter and her friend... the stay at the Hampton Inn was great also. i think we're hooked, and will return in the future. |

I came across your website after linking from an article about the pony swim on comcast.net. After looking through your whole website I wanted you know I love your little town and all it offers. Even without the pony swim, it sounds like a perfect place and is somewhere I would love to bring my family to visit someday. The seashore, nature and history it offers is exactly what I love. I've added you to my 'favorites', and will seriously consider vacationing there sometime in the future. Also, your website is awesome! It's FULL of information and very easy to navigate. Anything anyone could want to know is there and easy to follow. It's also beautifully designed, very soothing and pretty. My compliments to your web designer.

Our family had a wonderful time in your lovely town. The pony swim event was extremely organized and the volunteers were very friendly. This was our first time to attend the event and I hope we make it back real soon. My kids loved seeing the wild ponies and enjoyed the carnival. I even got to see dolphins swimming while we were at the beach. A terrific vacation for all. Trisha

We were in Chincoteague July 18 through 22. It was wonderful. Much, much better than going to Ocean City, MD, which we did for 2 1/2 hours. Loved the laid back atmosphere, trails on Assateague, Assateague National Shore. Just had a great time without being crowded.

I was eleven years old when my father went to fight in Vietnam and I came to Chincoteague to live with my grandfather Walter Watson of Maddox Blvd. I went to Chincoteague Elementary School for my sixth grade education in the fall of 1965. I lived on the island for a year before my dad returned and we moved to Fort Eustis, Va. and later moved to the Philadelphia area after he retired. What a wonderful place to live as a child or any age for that matter. Before my time is done I hope someday to return to live on the island and among the folks that that have made such a lasting heart felt impression on me.

have enjoyed the Pony Swim and Auction for the last12 years. I have stayed overnight in Salisbury and Crisfield and driven over to Chincoteague. Many times I have stayed at the Mariner Motel and was very satisfied. I hope this island doesn't change too much. It is a pleasant place to visit. I hope to be there again this year for the Pony Swim.

As a yearly visitor, I must say, it is my favorite spot for the most relaxing time. As a mom of 3, the quietness, slowed down atmosphere is a welcome change to our jaunts to the Jersey shore.

My family has been taking me to Chincoteague since I was about 5 years old, I'm now 17. I learned how to ride a bike in Maddox Family Campground. Two years ago, during the pony swim week, my aunt and uncle got married at memorial park. I've had alot of memories in Chincoteague, and I will be visiting later this month. I hope everything stays the same because the people and the food make it the best =)

I have been going to Chincoteague since the late 70's when I was a young girl. Now I take my family there and I absolutly love it. I am disappointed to see the old establishments closing and new condos/townhouses going up. Chincoteague does not need to become another Rehoboth or Ocean City. It needs to keep its charm and easy way of life and unique nature needs to be preserved.

In May of 1944 I was assigned to NAAS Chincoteague to learn to fly the PB4Y-1. I moved to the Island with my new bride and we rented a room from Mrs Davis and spent a wonderful three months there. We returned for a short visit about 20 years ago and found our home-away-from-home to be Miss Molly's Inn. My bride passed away a year ago but our lives were forever changed by the wonderful people of that community. My book, I WAS THERE WHEN THE WORLD STOOD STILL,(Authorhouse.com) has a full chapter about our life on the sland of Chincoteague.

I first came to Chincoteague in September, 1998 and fell in love with your island. I returned with a girl friend in October, 2002, again the end of May 2004 and brought two of my grandchildren the end of June 2004. It is an absolutely beautiful place, so peaceful and quiet. I could very easily live on Chincoteague Island and I know I will return soon. I wish I could afford to come more often, but I have to work, so my time is limited. I just read everything on this web site and it is fantastic, so complete and informative. As I said, I will be back.

I am a non-traditional college student of 53, working towards my Elementary Ed. and Special Ed. degrees. I am using information about Chincoteague and Assateague Islands, and the Wild Ponies, for a Social Studies Lesson Plan for one of my class requirements, specifically geared for 4th & 5th Grade. Your site has provided me with information for both the Economic and Civics Standards. I hope to visit your community some day. Thank you.

Assateague/Chincotegue looks like a lovely place to visit and I will keep it in mind te next time I am considering locations for vacation planning. Your site brought back lovely memories of when Marguerite Henry spoke at my grade school lo these many years ago about Misty and the horses of Chincoteague. Actually, I think my parents once took a vacation here (they missed the horses running, though) when they were living in MD.

We vacationed every year (1959-1969)from the time I was 8 until I left home. Stayed at Fisherman's Cove every year. It was owned at the time by a man name Ray Andrews who's wife's name was Fran. He would name all his personal boats Fran I, II, etc. I remember the last one I knew was Fran IV, just little 14 ft dingys. I hated that place, mosquitos everywhere, but now would love to see it. We did stay at Snug Harbor one year. It was a little nicer, FC was awful. Only thing I liked was clamming and going to the beach on the boat, past the oyster beds and canals. Actually there were good memories.

I am interested in how the Curtis Merritt Harbor was named. That is a relatives name so I would love to know if there is a connection. I remember riding the ferry to Cape Charles [ going over home ] from Norfolk as a child once a month to visit family . Visited Chincoteague only once then but have been back several times since and really love it. We will be over in a week or so to visit again. Marge
